Babe Ruth Questions and Answers:
Q. I'm not sure which Babe Ruth League I should sign up for.
A. If your son is 13, 14 or 15 and wants to play in a recreation type baseball league, you should register for the Babe Ruth Town Ball League. This year we have joined the Westford Babe Ruth League and will play against both Groton and Westford teams in a recreation style of baseball.
Q. I'd like my 13, 14, or 15 year old son to play in a more competitive baseball league, which should i sign up for?
A. The GYBL has joined with the Minuteman Travel League. This league is a competetive baseball League for 13, 14, and 15 year old players. The GYBL also has the option to field a 13 year old only team. If there is enough interest in this team then we will field as many teams as needed prvided there is enough interest.
Q. The Minuteman League is new this year, what can you tell me about it?
A. The Babe Ruth Minuteman League is comprised of over 36 teams across 4 different divisions. This is a competitive baseball league which will require players to tryout. For comparison, the league is similar to AAU baseball. Players will travel to surrounding towns including Concord, Carlisle, Maynard, Stow, Sudbury, Lincoln, Wayland, Westford, Littleton, Bolton and Weston. Groton plans on fielding 1 or 2 "travel teams" to compete in this league. All games are held on the weekend (Saturday and Sunday), thus, anyone playing Middle school or JV baseball will not have a conflict. Players in this league can also join and play in the recreation league with Westford.
Q. So, my son can play in both the Town Ball League and the Minuteman League or the Pariot League?
A. Yes.
Q. My son is 13 years old and wants to play in a more competitive League.
A. We are providing a competitive league for 13 year old players. 13 year old players can play in the Minuteman League. If there is enough interest we could choose to field a 13 year old team in what is called the Patriot League. If there is not enough interest we will place the 13 year old players who make the travel team on teams in the Minuteman League.
Q. What is the Patriot League?
A. This league is exclusively for 13 year old players. It is similar to the Minuteman league in that it is competitive and will be played against similar towns. It will require a tryout.
Q. What about Fees? Will there be separate fees for Town Ball League and The Minuteman and Patriot League?
A. Yes, each league will have a separate fee. If you play Town Ball and in Minuteman League there will be separate fees.
Q. What will the fees be for this year?
A. The Fee for the Town Ball League is $125, the Fee for the Minuteman League is $150, the fee for the Patriot League is $150.
Q. So, there are tryouts for the Minuteman League and the Patriot League?
A. Yes, tryouts are manditory. Please note that it is possible that players who tryout will not make the team.
Q. It looks like I have to pay for the travel league before I will know if my son makes the team, why?
A. Since this is the first year we are in this league, the GYBL is unsure about the interest and need to inform the Minuteman Travel League about how many teams will may field.
Q. If my son does not make the team, will my money be refunded?
A. Absolutely. We will refund your money as soon as the teams are announced.
Q. If my son does not make the team, can he still play rec ball?
A.If you want to be guaranteed to play baseball in the spring, but are worried about whether or not you will make the travel team, then you need to sign up for both the Travel and Rec leagues. If you make the Travel league, we will let you drop out of the Rec league with a full refund within 1 week of the notification.
If you sign up for just the Travel league and you don't make the team, you can still sign up for the Rec league but you will be put on a waiting list. We will use this list to fill in teams on a first come, first served basis.
Our recommendation is to sign up for both leagues if you want to be assured of playing spring baseball.
Q. When are tryouts?
A. Tryouts for both the Recreation Town Ball League and the Travel League will be held in March.
Q. My son played in AAU last year what should I do, should I try the Minuteman League?
A. You can continue to play in your AAU league, but your games may conflict as Minuteman games are held on the weekend. The choice is up to you.
General Information:
Dear GYBL Babe Ruth Parent,
If you have a player who is entering or playing in Babe Ruth, please read this message carefully.
Last season The GYBL Board received feedback from players and parents that they wanted to see improvements to the Groton Babe Ruth Program. Today the GYBL is pleased to announce that Groton Babe Ruth Baseball is undergoing several exciting changes for Babe Ruth Program (Babe Ruth Players are ages 13-15). Starting this baseball season, we will implement the following changes:
1. New Recreation “Town Ball” league- We are pleased to announce that we will join with the Westford Babe Ruth League. This league is open to all players 13-15 years old who wish to play baseball in a recreation type setting. The Westford Baseball League is a top tier league and our players will benefit greatly by playing in this league. Town Ball League games are played during the week (Mon-Fri).
2. New Travel Team League- We are also pleased to announce that we will be joining The Babe Ruth Minuteman League. This league is open to 13-15 year old players. The league comprises over 36 teams across 4 different divisions. All games are held on the weekend (Saturday and Sunday), thus, anyone playing Middle school baseball will not have a conflict. Players in this league can also join and play in the recreation league with Westford.
3. New 13 year Old Travel League- This league is exclusively for 13 year old players. It is similar to the Minuteman league in that it is competitive and will be played against similar towns. It will require a tryout. Please note: Because 13 year old players also play in the Minuteman Travel League, the GYBL will have to guage the amount of interest in this league. If there is not enough players to field a team, the 13 year old players will be placed in the Minuteman Travel League.
4. New Babe Ruth Board being formed- GYBL is creating a separate board exclusively for Babe Ruth. The board will comprise of a President, Vice-President and Coordinator. Given the size and growth of baseball in Groton, we felt it important to create a dedicated board to deal with operations. Additionally, a executive board will be formed comprising GYBL Cal Ripken President, Treasurer and the newly appointed Babe Ruth President to oversee the entire GYBL organizations.
For anyone that has interest in filling one of these roles, please contact
.
We are confident these changes will help address some of the challenges we have had with Babe Ruth baseball over the past couple of years. We feel it will serve the players best interests and will provide everyone with the opportunity to excel and more importantly, to have fun playing baseball.
We will be providing detailed information on these changes over the next few weeks on the GYBL web-site http://www.gybl.net/ . Registration will be open in January. A final note and change from last year is that All Babe Ruth teams will start play in the spring and will continue into June. For more information on the Minuteman Baseball League go to: http://www.mmbrl.com/
Thank you and we look forward to a great baseball season for our kids!
